Terms of Use

Effective October 19, 2026

Financial Companion is a privately operated personal-finance application. This site is run by the person or organization that hosts it (“the Operator”, “we”, “us”). These Terms are an agreement between you and the Operator.

Financial Companion is a record-keeping and planning tool. It is not a bank, broker-dealer, investment adviser, tax preparer or law firm, and nothing in it is financial, investment, tax or legal advice.

1. Agreement

By creating an account or using Financial Companion (the “Service”) you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy and Financial Disclaimer, which are part of these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

2. Eligibility and accounts

  • You must be at least 18 years old and able to form a binding contract.
  • Registration is by invitation. You must register with the email address the invitation was sent to and give accurate information.
  • You are responsible for keeping your password, authenticator app and devices secure, and for activity under your account. We strongly recommend turning on two-factor authentication. Tell us promptly at admin@fcompanion.app if you suspect unauthorized access.
  • If you invite a partner or household member, or share a property with a co-owner, you decide what they can see and you are responsible for that choice. You can revoke access at any time.

3. What the Service does

The Service helps you track accounts, transactions, budgets, bills, debts, rental properties and investments, and offers optional research, reporting, notification and AI-assisted features. Features may be added, changed, labeled as previews, or removed at any time. Preview and experimental features may be incomplete or inaccurate.

The Service cannot move money. It does not initiate payments, transfers or trades, and paper portfolios are simulations that never place orders with a broker.

4. Connected accounts and third-party services

You may choose to connect outside services, such as bank and card data aggregators (Plaid, SimpleFIN), an email mailbox for receipts, Discord, Google sign-in, or AI providers. When you connect one:

  • You authorize us, and the provider, to access and retrieve your information from that service on your behalf, for the purpose of providing the Service. You confirm you are entitled to grant that access.
  • Your use of that service is governed by its own terms and privacy policy. For example, Plaid’s handling of your data is described in the Plaid End User Privacy Policy.
  • We do not control those services and are not responsible for their availability, accuracy or conduct. Data they supply can be delayed, incomplete or wrong. Your financial institution’s records, not the Service, are the record of your accounts.
  • You can disconnect a service at any time from Settings or the relevant page.

5. Not advice

Budgets, forecasts, categorizations, tax-line suggestions, debt plans, investment research, stock grades, AI answers and every other output of the Service are general information produced by software from the data available to it. They are not personalized recommendations and may be wrong. You are solely responsible for your financial, investment and tax decisions; consult a qualified professional before acting. See the Financial Disclaimer for details.

6. AI features

Where AI features are enabled, the information needed to answer a request (for example, relevant transactions or a receipt image) is sent to the AI provider the Operator has configured. AI output can be inaccurate, incomplete or outdated. Review AI-proposed changes before you confirm them, and do not rely on AI output without checking it.

7. Your content

  • You keep ownership of the information, files and receipts you add or import (“Your Content”). You grant us a limited license to store, process, back up and display Your Content only as needed to operate the Service for you and the people you choose to share it with.
  • If you enter information about other people, such as tenants, co-owners or household members, you are responsible for having the right to do so and for complying with laws that apply to you (for example, landlord and fair-housing rules).
  • Keep your own records. You can export your data from Settings at any time. We take reasonable steps to back up the Service but do not guarantee that data cannot be lost.

8. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • access another person’s data or account without authorization, or share your credentials;
  • probe, scan or test the Service for vulnerabilities, or bypass its security, except as part of a good-faith report sent to us privately;
  • overload, disrupt, scrape or reverse-engineer the Service, or use it to send spam or malware;
  • upload content that is unlawful or that you have no right to share; or
  • use the Service for any unlawful purpose, including money laundering or fraud.

9. Fees

Unless the Operator tells you otherwise in writing, the Service is provided without charge. If any feature ever carries a fee, it will be disclosed before you incur it.

10. Suspension, termination and deletion

You may stop using the Service and delete your account at any time from Settings. Deleting your account removes your data as described in the Privacy Policy, revokes our Plaid connections and deletes your stored SimpleFIN and mailbox credentials. We may suspend or close an account that breaches these Terms, puts the Service or other users at risk, or where required by law, and we may discontinue the Service. Where practical we will give notice and an opportunity to export your data first.

11. Disclaimer of warranties

The Service is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, secure or error-free, or that any data, calculation or output is complete or correct.

12. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for lost profits, investment losses, tax penalties, lost data or the cost of substitute services, arising from or related to the Service, even if advised of their possibility. Our total liability for all claims relating to the Service is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us for the Service in the twelve months before the claim or US $50.

Some jurisdictions do not allow certain warranty exclusions or liability limits, so some of the above may not apply to you. Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, or your rights as a consumer under mandatory law.

13. Indemnity

You agree to indemnify and hold us harmless from claims and expenses arising from your breach of these Terms, your misuse of the Service, or Your Content, including information you enter about other people.

14. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms. If a change is material we will notify you in the app or by email before it takes effect. Continuing to use the Service after the effective date means you accept the updated Terms; if you do not, you may delete your account.

15. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the jurisdiction in which the Operator resides, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules, except where the law of your place of residence mandatorily applies.

16. General

If any part of these Terms is unenforceable, the rest remains in effect. Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver. You may not assign these Terms without our consent. These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy and Financial Disclaimer, are the entire agreement between you and the Operator about the Service.
